What is stopping you?
How well do you know Jesus?
Give yourself a score now between one and ten.
Now think about all the people in your life.
Where does Jesus fit?
Its easy to grow up in a religious community and get the idea that everyone are superstars when it comes to their faith. We can have the same thinking when we read the Bible. Its so easy to assume that the disciples must have been perfectionists. Wrong! The disciples were average people. Jesus had the option to choose anyone to be his disciples, but he didn’t pick people who were superstars. That means Jesus was ok with you not knowing him as well as you would like to. All Jesus wanted was the disciples to follow him. So, don’t worry if you gave a low score, just follow Jesus and you’re perfect for the team!
Jesus is inescapable and unavoidable. His fingerprints are everywhere. He changed the world. Jesus is the friend who wants good things for us more than we want them for ourselves.
Life is full of questions!
Jesus went to the territory near the town of Caesarea Philippi, where he asked his disciples “Who do people say the son of man is?” Some say John the Baptist”, they answered. “Others say Elijah, while others say Jeremiah or some other prophet”. “What about you?” he asked them. “Who do you say I am?”. Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Good for you, Simon son of John!” answered Jesus. “For this truth did not come to you from any human being, but it was given to you directly by my Father in heaven.
(Matthew 16: 13-17)
From this passage we get the sense that the disciples may have been a little hesitant. Perhaps they were looking around at each other wondering if these were trick questions maybe felt a bit like you felt at the start of this prayer. Remember they were human. There were many aspects to Peter, as there is to us all. But that day peter recognised the importance of that moment.
None the wiser!
How would you describe Jesus to someone who knows nothing about him? You probably would tell the story, which is the most powerful story ever told. But it loses its power when we take it for granted and become so familiar with it that we stop hearing it as part of our own story. Jesus wants us to follow him and have a deep and personal relationship with him. Right now, during Lent is the perfect opportunity to get to know Jesus Better.
