JudgementalAs we continue to explore the different relationships in our lives this term, we can start to see just how important the people around us are. But do we always see the bigger picture?

This week were going to look at our awareness of others. Do we see people for who they really are or do we see a stereotype? Do we really see how someone feels when we make fun of them? Do we really see how brilliant someone can be before we write them off?

We are going to challenge ourself to look past our assumptions and prejudices so that we can be come more aware of the people around us.

Monday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

It’s all looking a bit different on a Monday from now on! “Question of the day” is moving to Wednesdays and Mondays in the Chapel will be the new home of “Jam” The weekly opportunity to have a bit of a sing and meet new people in the Chapel.

As there is no question of the day today, Monday’s are instead going to be a chance to look at the theme for the week and to have a think about where it might go.

Have a look at this:

This amazing video was made to highlight the dangers of not seeing cyclists on the road, but maybe it tells us something more.

Are we really able to notice everything? Do the important things sometimes go over looked?

Spend a few moments thinking about the things that you might not pay attention to in a normal day. Things like the person who’s always left out, or the teacher who’s working really hard to help you.

Let’s try this week to look out for what really going on and be aware of the important things.

Lord, help us to see what’s really important. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Friday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

In this scripture story we hear a famous line “for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” What do you think this means?

Read the story outline and talk about how the different people would be feeling.

Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.”  He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.

-Samuel 17:4-7 NRSV
