Happiness - 5This whole term we are exploring our identity – who we are individually and collectively. St Irenaeus said that the “Glory of God is a human being fully alive” so this week we are going to think about what makes us feel alive – about what makes us happy.

There are lots of things that we think will make us happy and lots of things that we don’t realise we take for granted so this week we are going to celebrate the things that make us feel good and help us be fully alive.

Monday

BigQuestion750

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

Today’s big question is simple but important. Spend a few moments thinking of your answer then stand up one at a time and give your answer to the class (If you want to that is!)

What would make you happiest right now?!

We often take for granted those things that make us happy. God gives us so much and we find it so easy to ignore the amazing things that we have. Try and take a moment to recognise the things that make you happy today and thank God for them.

Morning Prayer: Thank you for the many blessings that you give us and for those things that make us happy. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Prayer at the end of the day

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Has something made you today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Wednesday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

In John’s Gospel Jesus says that he has come “So that we may have life and live it to the full” (John 10:10) This term has been all about finding out who we are, and finding out what makes us happy is a big part of that.

Whilst being happy may not be easy all the time it can actually help us to live our life to the full.

Watch this video – it’s about the science of happiness. It looks at the link between happiness and success and which comes first! (This video is about 7 minutes long so if you’re running out of time you can watch the second half tomorrow!)

Thursday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

Today for out PSHCE we’re going to look at weather money can make you happy! People often think they’ll be happy if they’re are rich – that if they make lots of money that means successful. But is that always true?

Explore the following scenario in small groups using the Key Process of “Roleplay”

“Somebody who’s just won £3 million on the lottery”

Use groups of about 5/6 people – think about 5 people that might be affected by a sudden lottery win (Obviously someone gets to be the lucky winner) and limit your role play to 30 seconds.

Decide between you what the effects might be on friends, family or anyone else you think would be involved and then share that with the class!

There is a great story in Matthew’s Gospel where a “Rich young man” ask’s Jesus a question about how to live a good life. His answer challenges him, as it challenges us, to think about whether or not money can lead to eternal happiness.

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to find what really makes us happy. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Prayer at the end of the day

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Have you made anyone else happy today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Friday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

For our scripture reflection we are going to focus on another Gospel story  from Mathew’s Gospel. Read the story together and discuss what it tells us about true happiness!

Matthew 6:19-21

19 ‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us to realise what makes us truly happy and to treasure it! Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Prayer at the end of the day

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

What are you going to do this weekend that makes you happy?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.
