nexusae0_gavel31Eliminating prejudice is all about how we judge other people. If we think we are better than others or write people off because of what they look like or where they come from then we run the risk of not allowing them to be who they want to be.

This week we are going to think about how we judge other people and what we can do to be more tolerant of others.

Monday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

A&J

First things first, you’ll notice there is a bit of a change to Monday’s “Big Question.”

Starting this week, two of our 6th form chaplaincy team are taking over Monday mornings to pose a question to the school. They are then going to continue the discussion in the Chapel during a Monday lunch time. It starts at 12:30 and the chapel won’t be open until then so go grab some lunch then come along and join the discussion!

Talk the question through in your form then come on down if you want to share that with other people from across the school.

If the video is not working – I know we are still having YouTube issues – then the Question of the day is this: Should we forgive and forget?

Lord, help us to forgive other people. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Prayer at the end of the day

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

Have you forgiven anyone today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Tuesday

We Start with the Sign of the Cross.

Labelling others is a really easy thing to do. When we meet someone for the first time – do we instantly make a judgement about that person? Do we instantly decide if we are going to like them or what they are like themselves?

This morning for our AOW we are going to think about the labels that we give to other people and about how we need to get rid of the labels that keep people down.

no_sexism_racism_homophobia

Think of a negative label label that people are given and write it on a piece of paper – it could be a label about anything, physical appearance, sexuality, intelligence etc. Then one by one screw up that label and instead of putting it on a person put it in the bin. As you’re doing this try to keep quiet and think about those people who get unfairly labelled and judged. Pray that they can be given a fair chance and that we can all be more tolerant towards others.

Morning Prayer: Lord, help us not to label people. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Prayer at the end of the day

We start with the Sign of the Cross.

Have you seen past someone’s label today?

Father, give us faith
And help us to appreciate the things we cannot see.
Inspire in us not just a faith in you, but a faith in our family, our friends and ourselves.
Thank you for the strength that comes from your love;
Help me, when I am at my weakest, to find my faith again. Amen.

We finish with the Sign of the Cross.

Wednesday

zacchaeusWe Start with the Sign of the Cross.

I know we usually hear our scripture on a Friday but the Gospel from This Sunday was too perfect not to include.

Choose a brave volunteer or 2 to read this out to the class:

Luke 19:1-10 – Zacchaeus

Jesus was going through Jericho, where a man named Zacchaeus lived. He was in charge of collecting taxes and was very rich. Jesus was heading his way, and Zacchaeus wanted to see what he was like. But Zacchaeus was a short man and could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree.

When Jesus got there, he looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down! I want to stay with you today.” Zacchaeus hurried down and gladly welcomed Jesus.

Everyone who saw this started grumbling, “This man Zacchaeus is a sinner! And Jesus is going home to eat with him.”

Later that day Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “I will give half of my property to the poor. And I will now pay back four times as much to everyone I have ever cheated.”

Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “Today you and your family have been saved, because you are a true son of Abraham. The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost.”

Everybody else had written Zacchaeus off but Jesus chose him out of all the people to stay with. Why? What does Jesus’s treatment of Zacchaeus teach us to do?

Write your answer in the comment box!
