Welcome back to the new school year and if you’re joining us for the first time then hello and welcome!

Hopefully you all had a good summer and as much as we dread coming back if you’re like me then you kind of secretly look forward to the first day back seeing your fiends again and doing something a bit different.

I know for me, I’ve been really excited about the new term as it means I finally get to do the job I’ve been looking forward to for so long.

Alot of people ask me what a School Chaplain is meant to be and I suppose there’s no one answer. First and foremost I’m here to be what you need me to be whether that’s for advice or information or just to provide a place and opptunity to understand your faith a bit more.

The Becket is a catholic school which means that our faith should be at the heart of everything we do, but I know what it’s like. I struggled with the whole God thing when I was at school and I still don’t find it easy now! It maybe that you’re not sure what you believe if anything at all and let me tell you, I am not here to tell you what to think! It’s your choice. I hope though, you can make a choice about faith based on what you see and experience, because again if your anything like me, when I look back, I can see people who inspired me and who’ve helped me be who I am today. I was inspired by my friends my family and my teachers in different ways and I firmly believe that I found my faith because I found a goodness in other people I could believe in.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is ask questions, think about what and who is important to you and have an open mind. Do you best to be your best and you’ll find yourself inspiring others too. Be inspirational and I hope that you’ll see what our faith should be about. It’s not about sitting in mass being bored or praying over and over and over again it’s about being a good person. Jesus was not someone who followed the crowd he was someone who challenged convention, sought the truth and above all – set an example. I think it’s fair to say I’ve been inspired by him too.

Use this new year to make a difference to others and a difference to your self. If you want things to chance/happen in liturgies and mass then make it happen and don’t sit there moaning about it, be brave enough to sing if you want to without checking with other people if it’s okay! Visit the chapel, ask questions and above all: Be inspirational.
